At the job I’ve had for just about 4 years to the day.
And I vow not to do a single billable hour between now and then. Moving to an in-house directorship job, and leaving the consulting side of the business after 13 years feels pretty damn good.

Nice. Best of luck in the new gig, and enjoy the break, even if it’s brief. Will you be doing any hands-on design work, or more managerial stuff?

Ha! I had to assure them that I was not, in fact, a dictator, and that I would play well with others.

Lots of hands-on. And my favorite part of it is that they do all the namufacturing in-house. As in, right there in the building. Gonna be fun, not just dealing with the product, but the customer experience and the whole brand. Super talented engineers to work with. I think it’s gonna be fun. And way lower stress day-to-day. Can’t beat that.

Very, very cool. I imagine it’ll be nice to have design and manufacturing under the same roof.

I’m looking forward to it. I pretty much grew up in my dad’s machine shop. When I first went in there I just wanted to hug the whole building. I love seeing shit get made, and love that it’s providing for a lot of people here. Something I can actually be proud of.

Congrats man. As a freelance ids guy, i feel your pain with the consulting stuff. I got offered a full time gig last year, but couldnt take it. Sucked. But oh well hopefully soon. Then i can stop padding my billable hours lol

Yeah, after having played the consulting game for all these years, getting away from that business model is a huge relief. Of course, it’s equally scary to have the future of a business resting in your hands, but that’s even more incentive to do kickass work.

Thanks! It’s a big departure from anything I’ve done before— going from consultancy to in-house is such a big transition I’m still just trying to get my head around it.

I’m sure you’ll do very well. Hope the new job doesn’t preclude you from sketching and sharing your sketches with OPPO - ha!

Quite the opposite, I think. It’s the lowest-stress environment I’ve ever experienced. It’s kinda fucking awesome.

That’s fantastic. At my new gig (day job is as a software/mapping specialist), I’m actually more busy most days than I was at my job immediately prior, but it’s a small, private company vs. a big, public one, so no corporate BS. Sure is less frustrating to know your work actually matters, and having an equity stake doesn’t hurt either!
